1967 Mickey Mantle Armour Franks Advertising Sign
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $940
Extremely rare point-of-sale advertising sign, issued in promotion of Armour Franks, picturing an illustrated image of Mickey Mantle in the lower left. This is a gorgeous display piece and an incredible rarity. To the best of our knowledge, this is one of just several examples known, all of which were discovered together years ago. We have only ever offered one other example (which appeared as lot 1019 in REA's May 2006 auction, and sold for $2,900). We had never seen this piece prior to that discovery and this is the first example we have seen since. The colorful point-of-sale sign, which is of exceptional production quality, prominently features an illustration of the company's coupon-redemption prize, a Rawlings Mickey Mantle glove, and reads "MOM! Be a hero to your Little Leaguer! Get this Mickey Mantle Genuine Rawlings Fielder's Glove-Only $5.00 with Coupon from special packages of Armour Franks." Printed alongside the glove are its many attributes, including the fact that its design is "New for 1967." Hot dogs and baseball have always had a special connection. Over the years, several promotions by Armour Franks involved baseball, most notably the issuing of plastic coins featuring baseball players (1955 to 1960). Although the list of Mickey Mantle endorsed items may seem endless, this particular advertising piece is one of the rarest and most attractive from the era and a true collecting gem. The sign (11 x 7 inches) displays minor corner and edge wear, as well as three tiny stains along the top right border that do not detract in the least from its overall Excellent to Mint appearance. Mounted and framed to total dimensions of 15.5 x 11.5 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500+. SOLD FOR $940
