Circa 1963 Dell Publishing American and National League All-Star Banners with Mickey Mantle and Sandy Koufax
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $411
Pair of gigantic display banners produced by Dell Publishing in the early 1960s (presumably a complete set of two), each featuring thirteen large photographic images of stars from the American and National Leagues, respectively. The American League banner, titled "Dell Sports' American League All-Star Pin-Up," features images of Mickey Mantle, Harmon Killebrew, Whitey Ford, Al Kaline, Carl Yastrzemski, Luis Aparicio, Gary Peters, Rich Rollins, Albie Pearson, Bobby Richardson, Dick Stuart, Dick Radatz, and Elston Howard. The National League banner, titled "Dell Sports' National League All-Star Pin-Up," displays images of Sandy Koufax, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Juan Marichal, Bill Mazeroski, Roberto Clemente, Warren Spahn, Bill White, Ken Boyer, Vada Pinson, Dick Groat, John Edwards, and Tommy Davis. Appropriately, the images of both Mantle and Koufax are the largest and most prominent on each respective banner. Dell Publishing was the publisher of Dell Sports , one of the leading sports magazines of the 1960s, as well as various other sports periodicals. Based upon the players depicted and their respective team affiliations, these banners must date from either 1963 or 1964 (we believe 1963), and were issued by Dell for retail sale for twenty-five cents each. Few collectors have ever seen these banners. Their rarity today is a result of both their size, their intended use (wall display, after which they would have been discarded), as well as their expense. (Twenty-five cents was a significant sum for youngsters in 1963). When factory-folded as issued, each poster had the look of a magazine and may have even been sold on the racks with the exciting Dell baseball publications. We have only handled one other example (the American League banner) and cannot recall having ever seen the American and National League banners offered together as a single lot. This is an extremely attractive and scarce set of these impressive display banners that are of exceptional quality and design and have long been under the radar of most collectors. Each banner (52.5 x 18.75 inches) displays a one vertical and three horizontal fold lines (as issued), along the edges and intersections of which appear a few tiny tears. The American League banner has a piece of clear tape on the reverse in support/repair of a tiny tear at one of the intersecting folds; otherwise, each banner is in Excellent condition overall.
