1921 Christy Mathewson Testimonial Program and Ticket Stub

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,058

Extremely rare and significant sixteen-page program and ticket stub from the Christy Mathewson Testimonial held at the Polo Grounds on September 30, 1921. This testimonial, given to Mathewson by the New York Giants prior to a game against the Boston Braves, was occasioned by tragic circumstances. Mathewson had just recently been diagnosed with tuberculosis in both lungs resulting from his exposure to mustard gas in World War I. Subsequently, he was sent to Saranac Lake, New York, for treatment. Before he left, the Giants felt compelled to honor their greatest star with a rousing tribute. This program is filled with written testimonials from all of the top sportswriters of the era, including Fred Lieb, Sam Crane, Bozeman Bulger, Ring Lardner, and Grantland Rice. The program also features numerous photos of "Matty" plus biographical data and his playing statistics. The cover displays a picture of him as he looked during his prime as a member of the Giants, flanked by the caption "Christy Mathewson/New York's Beloved 'Big Six'/A gentleman, sportsman, soldier and New York's foremost baseball figure of all time." The back cover pictures him in military garb during World War I. Unfortunately, Mathewson never recovered from his illness and he passed away in 1925. In 1936 he was one of the first five players inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. The program (6 x 9 inches) has a center fold (of no consequence) and the rear cover displays both patches of surface paper loss and paper residue as a result of its having once been mounted, and then removed, from an album. In Very Good condition. Accompanying the program is a ticket stub from the game (1.25 x 3 inches), a significant item in its own right, that has been neatly affixed to the front cover of the program and is otherwise in Excellent condition. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,058
