1906 Fan Craze National League Playing Card PSA-Graded Complete Set (54)
Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $16,450
Presented is one of the finest sets in existence of 1906 Fan Craze National League playing cards. This is an extraordinary high-grade complete set of all fifty-four cards plus header card, original box, and game board. Incredibly, this set was found at an estate sale in Wisconsin by our consignor (a noncollector). The set was in its original box and the cards had obviously never been handled. Fortunately, the buyer (who had no idea the value of what he had purchased) had the good sense to contact us. When the set arrived, we were so impressed with the pristine condition that we submitted the entire set for grading. All fifty-four player cards plus header card have been PSA graded (all submitted by REA). This complete set of 54 playing cards feature what many collectors consider the finest portrait poses of turn-of-the-century ballplayers ever produced on baseball cards. Issued in 1906 by the Fan Craze Company of Cincinnati, these cards were designed as a deck of baseball game playing cards. Fourteen Hall of Famers are represented: Honus Wagner, Beckley, Bresnahan, Brown, Chance, Clarke, Duffy, Hanlon, Huggins, Kelley, McGraw, McGinnity, Nichols, and Willis. Also included is National League President Harry Pulliam. The Fan Craze set has a special significance to collectors, as it is one of the few sets issued in the earliest years of the twentieth century, and the set includes many players who appear in no other card sets. Because of its year of issue, it is also one of the few sets which include a blend of 1910-era stars along with players who made their mark in the nineteenth century, such as Kid Nichols, Joe Kelley, and Jake Beckley, who in 1906 were just winding down their playing careers. The PSA grades are as follows: Two GEM MINT 10: Ames and McIntyre. Nineteen MINT 9: Bresnahan (HOF), Brown (HOF), Browne, Chance (HOF), Donlin, Ewing, Howard, Huggins (HOF), Leach, Maloney, McGinnity (HOF), O'Neil, Pittinger, Ruelbach, Ritchey, Seymour, Wagner (HOF), Weimer, and Willis (HOF). Fourteen NM-MT 8: Casey, Clarke (HOF), Corcoran, Doolin, Dunleavy, Kling, Nichols (HOF), Overall, Pfeffer, Phillippe, Tenney, Theilman, Wicker, and Wiltsie. One NM+ 7.5: McGann. Six NM 7: Beckley (HOF), Duffy (HOF), Kelley (HOF), McGraw (HOF), J. Taylor, and I. Young. Five EX-MT 6: Hanlon (HOF), Pulliam, L. Taylor, Thomas, and Header Card. Eight EX 5: Beaumont, Bergen, Dahlen, Dooin, Fraser, Lumley, Lundgren, and Sheckard. The original box is complete but a little rough, in overall Good condition. The game board is in Ex-Mt condition. This is obviously an extremely sharp looking set which has been stored untouched in its original box since 1906! This spectacular prewar set is one of the few, and one of the most important, issues of the era, and in the opinion of many represents one of the best values of all cards issued in the early 1900s. Easily one of the finest sets in existence, this set has literally never seen the light of day. The SMR value for the assigned grades is $19,895. Total: 55 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000/$10,000+. SOLD FOR $16,450
