1871-1928 Baseball Guide Collection Including Many Rarities and with Large Spalding Guide Run (83)

Starting Bid - $1,500, Sold For - $6,463

This large collection of seventy-three early baseball guides, plus eleven guides for other sports, is highlighted by a number of significant rarities and an intermittent run of thirty-two Spalding Guides spanning the years 1879 through 1928. Condition, as one might expect for publications of this age, is less than perfect, with many guides displaying tape repair to the spine and/or covers, and nearly all displaying tears to both the covers and/or interior pages. A few of the early, single guides have been individually graded. For all of the others, condition ranges from Poor to Very Good, averaging Fr-Gd. Please note that a grade of Fr-Gd is easily earned (due to cover, tears, etc.), and that the integrity of these guides remains very much intact despite their modest technical grades, which so often "comes with the territory" with early guides. Included are a few duplicates. The number of issues for each year listed, if more than one, is noted in parentheses. 1871 Beadle's The Dime Base-Ball Player (missing back cover; Fr); Our Boys Base Ball Rules for 1877 (Fr); 1882 DeWitt's Base Ball Guide (Fr); 1888 Chadwick's Baseball Manual (Pr); Spalding's Official Baseball Guide (32): 1879 (2), 1880, 1883, 1884, 1885 (2), 1886 (3), 1887 (2), 1888, 1889, 1891, 1892, 1895 (2), 1901, 1903, 1905, 1906, 1908, 1909, 1910, 1911, 1912, 1913, 1914, 1915, 1916, and 1917; Reach's Official Base Ball Guide (4): 1894, 1895, 1899, and 1900; Reach's Official American Association Base Ball Guide (2): 1888 (2); Reach's Official American League Base Ball Guide (10): 1904, 1905 (2), 1907, 1908, 1910, 1911, 1913, 1914, and 1918; Who's Who in Baseball (13): 1916 (2), 1918, 1919, 1920, 1922 (2), 1923, 1924, 1925, 1926, 1927, and 1928; Napoleon Lajoie's Official Base Ball Guide (4): 1906, 1907, 1908 (2); Baseball - How to Play the Game by John McGraw (2): 1908 and 1913; The Bull Durham Base Ball Guide (2): 1910 and 1911; Spalding's Official Basket Ball Guide for 1913-1914 ; Spalding's Official Foot Ball Guide (8): 1905, 1908, 1911 (2), 1912, 1913 (2), and 1914; 1891 Spalding's Library of Athletic Sports - Hand Book of Lawn Tennis ; and 1888 How to Box .
