Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris Signed Baseball
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,113
Official American League (MacPhail) Rawlings ball signed in blue ink by both Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris. Mantle's signature (grading "9") occupies the sweet spot, while Maris' signature (grading "8") appears on the panel directly below. Mantle/Maris signed baseballs have always been highly prized by collectors and remain the most desirable dual-signed ball in the hobby with the exception of a Ruth/Gehrig example. They are also rare. Despite the duo's fame following the historic 1961 season, balls signed by the pair are much scarcer than one would imagine. The primary reason for that is the fact that Maris passed away in 1985, just prior to the "signing-show boom." Unfortunately, the high demand for Mantle/Maris signed balls, coupled with their scarcity, has resulted in countless forgeries over the years. Given the large number of problem "Mantle/Maris" balls circulating in the hobby today, sophisticated collectors have come to truly appreciate how rare and desirable authentic examples, such as this, are in today's marketplace. While no exact dating for this ball can be established, the fact that it does not feature any dots under the Rawlings emblem indicates that it was produced (and presumably signed) between the years 1977 and 1980. The ball displays very light surface wear and all of the manufacturer's labels are boldly stamped. This is an outstanding Maris-Mantle ball in Very Good to Excellent condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $4,113
