Roger Maris Single-Signed Ball

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,058

Wilson official Pacific Coast League (Cutler) baseball inscribed on a side panel by Roger Maris. The black-ink inscription, which reads "To Miles/Best Wishes/Roger Maris," encompasses the entire panel and grades "9." Based upon the manufacturer’s stampings, this ball was signed by Maris sometime between 1979 and 1985. (William S. Cutler was president of the Pacific Coast League from 1979 to 1997 and Maris passed away on December 14, 1985.) Roger Maris is one of the most desirable of all non-Hall of Fame signatures, especially alone on a baseball. Unfortunately for collectors, Maris passed just prior to the "signing-show boom," thus resulting in the rarity of Maris singles in the hobby today. Maris has long been a favorite of forgers. With a limited supply and high demand, it’s no wonder that Maris’ signature is one of the most commonly forged of all modern-era stars. Given the large number of problem "Maris" balls circulating in the marketplace today, an authentic and additionally inscribed Maris ball such as this is especially desirable. The ball displays light age toning on a side panel (not the signature panel) and is in Excellent to Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+ . SOLD FOR $1,058
