Thurman Munson Single-Signed Baseball

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $2,938

Official American League (MacPhail) ball signed on the sweet spot in black ink by legendary Yankees captain Thurman Munson. Although the signature has faded slightly, it is perfectly legible and grades a strong overall "5/6." Munson was never known as a prolific signer during his playing career and he normally shunned the attention of the fans. That fact, combined with his untimely death in 1979 at the age of thirty-two, has resulted in the scarcity of Munson-signed items today, particularly single-signed balls. Thurman Munson was one of the finest all-around catchers of his era and another in a long line of legendary Yankees players. A former Rookie of the Year, six time All-Star selection and League MVP, Munson helped lead the Yankees to three pennants and two World Championships during his brief career. In addition to his remarkable offensive achievements (including three consecutive seasons of batting over .300 with 100 or more RBI) Munson was also awarded three Gold Glove Awards in recognition of his defensive skills. In 1976 he received possibly his highest honor when he was named the team's first captain since Lou Gehrig. His tragic death in 1979 remains one of the darkest days in Yankees history and, not surprisingly, signaled the downfall of the team's 1970s dynasty. Munson's signature, like that of Roger Maris, has always been highly prized by collectors and today Munson single-signed balls, because of their extreme rarity, represent a holy grail for most autograph collectors. This is only the second Munson single-signed ball offered by REA in the past eight years and one of just a few we have ever handled that does not include either a salutation or a personalization. The ball displays light scattered toning and minor surface wear. All of the manufacturer's stampings are bold and legible. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $2,938
