1960 Roberto Clemente Twice-Signed Real-Photo Postcard

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,058

Rare Roberto Clemente twice-signed real-photo postcard dating from the Pirates' 1960 World Championship season. Clemente has inscribed the front of the card, "To Mrs. Dain/Best Wishes/ Roberto Clemente" in blue ink (grading "10") directly above his black facsimile signature. Clemente has further inscribed the card on the reverse in blue ink ("8/9"), "Thanks very much for the Birthday card/Roberto C." It is addressed to "Mrs. Esther M. Dain" of Pittsburgh and has been postmarked "Sept 12 1960." The postcard, produced by J. D. McCarthy, as noted on the reverse, captures Clemente in uniform as he poses on one knee. This type of postcard was ordered to help players respond to the many requests it received from fans for autographs, hence the black facsimile signature of Clemente on the front. Actual signed examples, let alone ones twice signed, are the rare exception, making this an especially desirable Clemente piece. The fact that it dates from the club's 1960 World Championship season provides an added appeal. The record shows that Clemente went 2-5 in the Pirates' 6-1 win over the Giants at Forbes Field on September 12, 1960, the date this postcard was mailed. Clemente finished the year with sixteen home runs, 94 RBI, and a .312 batting average in leading the club to its first pennant since 1927. The club then went on to defeat the New York Yankees in dramatic fashion in the World Series. The postcard (3.25 x 5.5 inches) displays two small pieces of clear tape on the front, one at the top left border and the other at the bottom left border, both of which have browned with age. The reverse displays evidence of it having once been mounted in a period photo album. Without regard to the tape, the postcard is in Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,058
