1960 Ty Cobb Single-Signed Ball

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,525

Official American League (Cronin) ball signed by Ty Cobb just one year prior to his passing. Cobb has personally inscribed and dated the ball in blue ink (grading "9") on a side panel "To Nick Geriak/From/ Ty Cobb - 1/24/60." Ty Cobb single-signed balls have always been highly prized by autograph collectors. They are also somewhat scarce. Even though Cobb lived to the age of seventy-four, his reputation for being unfriendly and unapproachable no doubt deterred potential autograph seekers. For that reason single-signed Ty Cobb baseballs are far rarer than single-signed Ruth balls, despite the fact that Cobb lived thirteen years longer than Ruth. Ironically, Cobb was actually a very accommodating signer if given the opportunity. In his retirement years, especially as he got older, Cobb greatly enjoyed hearing from fans and it was customary for him to include a short personalization on all of the balls and photos he signed. From our perspective we find such personalized balls particularly desirable as they provide a context, often include a date, and provide more writing by the player. The ball displays beautifully and all of the manufacturing stampings are legible. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. This is an outstanding Ty Cobb single-signed ball dating from his final years. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $3,525
