1946 Babe Ruth Twice-Signed Check
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,288
This particular Babe Ruth personal check is all the more desirable for the fact that Ruth has signed it twice: once on the front and again on the reverse as an endorsement. Of all the Ruth personal checks that exist, only a tiny percentage share this special distinction. (We have only ever offered one other example previously.) The check, dated June 3, 1946, and drawn on The Chase National Bank of the City of New York, is made out to "Cash" in the amount of $50.00. It has been signed "G. H. Ruth" in black fountain pen on both the front (grading "9") and the reverse (grading "8," very slight brushing). A second endorsement (illegible) appears below Ruth's name on the reverse. Ruth's name is preprinted along the left margin. Many years ago several hundred Ruth checks originating from the family appeared on the market all at once. These have long since been absorbed and now Ruth checks are increasingly difficult to find, let alone twice-signed examples. Checks have long been a favorite of autograph collectors due to their inherent authenticity and the fact that the signatures on checks are almost always very well executed. The check (8.5 x 3 inches) displays normal bank cancellation stamps and holes, a tiny ink stain in the date, and three vertical folds, one of which runs through the Ruth signature on the front, very clean and otherwise in Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $5,288
