1928 New York Yankees World Champions Team-Signed Ball with Ruth and Gehrig
Starting Bid - $1,500, Sold For - $17,625
Outstanding example of one of the most desirable team-signed balls in the hobby. This Spalding "Babe Ruth Home Run Special" baseball has been signed in blue fountain pen by the following seventeen members of the 1928 World Champion New York Yankees: Babe Ruth (sweet spot, grading "9"), Gehrig ("7"), Lazzeri, Durocher, Combs, Shocker, Campbell, Durst, Thomas, Robertson, Gazella, Grabowski, Fletcher (coach), Koenig, Collins, Shealy, and Paschal. While purely conjecture, it is highly probable that this ball was signed in spring training because it features the signatures of three other players who never appeared on the club's official roster that season. Research indicates that one of those three players, a pitcher named William Rabb, later played with the Toledo Mudhens in 1928. The names of the other two players are partially illegible. Further supporting the theory that this ball was obtained during spring training is the fact that it has been signed by Urban Shocker. Shocker's signature on any 1928 Yankees team ball is extremely rare since he retired from baseball in May of that year after appearing in just one game with the Yankees. The fact that he died that September from a bout with pneumonia has resulted in the rarity of his signature in any form. The signatures range in grade from "6" to "9," averaging "7." The ball is moderately toned, with a few minor surface abrasions, and is in Very Good to Excellent condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000. SOLD FOR $17,625
