Circa 1925 Autograph Sheet with Walter Johnson, Tris Speaker, and Others
Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,528
This small sheet of paper features the vintage signatures of eight of the top players in the American League during the mid 1920s: Walter Johnson, Tris Speaker, Harry Heilmann, Sam Rice, Goose Goslin, Ossie Bluege, Roger Peckinpaugh, and Muddy Ruel. Johnson's signature has been scripted in black fountain pen (grading "9"), while each of the others has been executed in pencil (grading "7/8"). This sheet originates from the family of a gentleman who lived in the Washington area and was good friends with many of the Senators players during the 1920s. Not surprisingly, all of the players represented here were members of the Senators at one point in their careers with the exception of Heilmann. Johnson, Rice, Bluege, Peckinpaugh, Ruel, and Goslin all played together on Washington between the years 1923 and 1927. In 1927 Speaker joined the Senators, but Peckinpaugh was traded to the Chicago White Sox. While no one in the family can recall when this sheet dates from, based upon the players present, it was probably signed during the mid 1920s, which was also the time of Washington's two consecutive pennants and one-and-only World Championship. The sheet, which is folded to its current dimensions of 4 x 5.5 inches, displays a horizontal fold (running through the Peckinpaugh signature), a few edge tears, and light foxing. In Very Good condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,528
