1890 N172 Old Judge Sidney Farrar, Philadelphia (Players League)
Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $823
Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. Presented is one of N172 Old Judge’s great rarities: the 1890 Players League designation card featuring Sidney Farrar with Philadelphia. All 1890 Players League cards are extremely rare and very highly prized by serious nineteenth-century collectors. Only a few examples (in some cases only one) of any given Old Judge Players League card are known to exist. 1890 was the last year that Old Judge issued baseball cards (they did so in only very limited numbers) and that was also the only year of existence of the short-lived Players League. This is a very attractive example of this significant rarity. The card has evenly rounded corners and the contrast is a little light, as is always the case with 1890 Old Judge Players League cards. Without reference to the unobtrusive line of calligraphic writing along the left edge, this card would grade Vg. This is a very important and extremely rare Old Judge, issued during one of the nineteenth-century baseball’s most turbulent periods. Reserve $400. Estimate $800+. SOLD FOR $823
