1964 Topps Rookie All-Star Banquet Complete Boxed Set Collection (3 Sets)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $9,400

Collection of three complete 1964 Topps Rookie All-Star Banquet sets, each housed in its original box as issued, originating from the collection of legendary Topps executive Sy Berger. These sets were only distributed to guests attending Topps' 1964 annual dinner honoring the Major League recipients of Topps' rookie all-star team awards. In a novel approach that year, Topps decided to abandon the traditional dinner program and instead produced this set, which was distributed as a special keepsake to attendees. Each of the thirty-six cards in the set is designed as if it were a "page" of a program and is numbered in the lower right corner. Cards #8-12 feature composite photos of former award recipients from 1959 through 1963, while cards #13-34A highlight the 1964 winners (each player's picture card is paired with a separate card, written by the public relations director of the player's respective club, which lists his many achievements). Other cards are dedicated to Topps officials and various panel members. All of the cards are printed in black-and-white, on quality card stock, and are highlighted by either red or light blue graphics, with the exception of the "front cover" and "back cover" cards (which are multicolor). The box bears the number "6" on the front (as this was Topps' sixth annual rookie awards dinner) as well as the date and location of the dinner ("Waldorf-Astoria, October 22, 1964). Sy Berger was responsible for conceiving the idea of the annual rookie award ceremony, which began in 1959, so it's not surprising that these three rare sets were discovered among his many mementoes, literally untouched since 1964. Two of the sets are in Near Mint to Mint condition. The third set is also in Near Mint to Mint condition, with the exception of two cards (the "cover card" and card #34) which have creases. All three examples of Card #12, which is the key card in the set (featuring Pete Rose as a member of the 1963 Topps Rookie All-Star Team), are in Near Mint condition. Two of the boxes include the original plastic slipcase sleeve as issued. One box is without the original plastic sleeve, displays moderate wear, and is in Very Good condition. The other two boxes are in Excellent condition overall. Total three complete sets of this rare and unusual Topps Rookie Award All-Star Banquet set. From the Sy Berger Collection. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500++. SOLD FOR $9,400
