1954-1967 New York and San Francisco Giants Team-Signed Ball Collection (8)

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,175

Collection of eight New York or San Francisco Giants team-signed balls spanning the years 1954 through 1967, from the Sy Berger Collection. It is not surprising that Sy Berger would have a strong selection of Giants team-signed balls, as his extremely close association and personal friendship with Willie Mays (which continues to this day) dates from Mays' rookie season. Among the highlights are balls from the Giants World Championship season of 1954 and pennant-winning season of 1962, the signature of Masanori Murakami (the first Japanese player in Major League history; written in Japanese) on the 1964 ball, and the rare signature of Carl Boles on the 1962 ball (his only season in the Majors). All Hall of Fame signatures are duly noted in each listing. 1954 New York Giants. Twenty-five blue-ink signatures ("5" to "7") on a Spalding "Official League" ball: Mays, Wilhelm, Irvin, Lockman, Williams, Dark, Thompson, Mueller, Westrum, Katt, Rhodes, Gardner, Evers, Amalfitano, Antonelli, Maglie, Grissom, Liddle, Hearn, Jansen, McCall, Giel, Monzant, Durocher (Mgr., stamped signature, sweet spot), and one other (illegible). Ex. 1957 New York Giants. Twenty-four signatures, in various inks ("6" to "10," averaging "7/8"), on a Tober "Official League" ball, including Mays, Lockman, Miller, Thomson, Antonelli, Gomez, Thomas, Spencer, Mueller, O'Connell, Rhodes, Sauer, and Rigney (Mgr., stamped signature, sweet spot), and Worthington. 1959 San Francisco Giants. Thirty signatures in either blue or red ink ("4" to "10, the eleven red-ink signatures all display moderate bleeding) on an ONL (Giles) ball, including Mays (bleeding), McCovey (rookie season), Alou, Sauer, McCormick, Spencer, Rigney (Mgr., stamped signature, sweet spot), Davenport, and Jablonski. This ball was most likely signed during spring training, as Jablonski did not make the team that year. Ex. 1962 San Francisco Giants. Twenty-seven blue-ink signatures ("8/9") on an ONL (Cronin) ball, including McCovey, Cepeda (sweet spot), Marichal, Mays (clubhouse signature), Boles (rare signature, only played one season), Dark (Mgr., sweet spot), Kuenn, Larsen, Pierce, McCormick, Haller, F. Alou, M. Alou, Orsino, O'Dell, Sanford, and Davenport. Nr-Mt. 1963 San Francisco Giants. Twenty-eight blue-ink signatures ("7" to "10") on an ONL (Giles) ball, including Mays, McCovey, Cepeda (sweet spot), Marichal, Perry, O'Dell, Constable, Davenport, Kuenn, Hiller, F. Alou, Larsen, Pierce, Sanford, Dark (Mgr., stamped signature, sweet spot), and Amalfitano. Ex-Mt. 1964 San Francisco Giants. Twenty-eight blue-ink signatures ("5" to "9," averaging "6/7") on an ONL (Giles) ball, including Cepeda (sweet spot), McCovey, Snider, Marichal, Perry, Mays (clubhouse), Murakami (first Japanese player in the Major Leagues, signed in Japanese), Kuenn, Alou, Lanier, Crandall, Dark (Mgr., stamped signature, sweet spot), Haller, and Shaw. Ex. 1967 San Francisco Giants. Twenty-four blue or black-ink signatures ("9/10") on a Spalding "Official League" ball, including McCovey, Marichal (sweet spot), Perry, Mays (clubhouse, on ball label), Groat (clubhouse, sweet spot), Fuentes, Davenport, Sadecki, Lanier, and McCormick. Light toning throughout; otherwise Nr-Mt. 1967 San Francisco Giants. Twenty-four blue or black-ink signatures ("8" to "10") on a Spalding "Official League" ball, including McCovey, Marichal (sweet spot), Perry, Mays (clubhouse, on ball label), Groat (clubhouse, sweet spot), Fuentes, Davenport, Sadecki, Lanier, Dietz, and McCormick. Vg-Ex. From the Sy Berger Collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Total: 8 balls. Reserve $400. Estimate $800+. SOLD FOR $1,175
