1956-1962 New York Yankees World Champions Team-Signed Ball Collection (5)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,293

This collection of five New York Yankees team-signed balls is comprised of two dating from the team's 1956 World Championship season and three from the club's 1962 World Championship season. These balls are from the Sy Berger Collection. Topps was located in New York, and it was only natural that Yankee Stadium was Sy Berger's local Major League "home base." The Yankees had a tradition of signing team balls for players and for special friends of the club. These were sometimes marked by the clubhouse manager with initials or notes so that the balls were sure to get to their intended recipient. That's why one of the balls is marked "Topps"! 1956: Twenty-seven blue ink signatures ("5" to "8") on an OAL (Harridge) ball, including Mantle (sweet spot, "7"), Berra (sweet spot), Rizzuto, Ford, Howard, Martin, Hunter, Kucks, Terry, Siebern, Byrne, Carey, Morgan, Cerv, Larsen, Bauer, Turley, Grim, Collins, Carroll, Silvera, McDougald, Skowron, and Coleman. Also included on the ball is the signature of Paul LaPalme, who played with the White Sox in 1956. Ex. 1956: Twenty-four blue-ink signatures ("6" to "9") on a Tober "Official League" ball, including Berra (sweet spot), Ford, Skowron, Carroll, Cerv, Howard, Turley, McDougald, Carey, Martin, McDermott, Coleman, Kucks, Hunter, Byrne, Larsen, Morgan, Bauer, and Sturdivant. The printed notation "Topps" is printed on a side panel. Ex-Mt. 1962: Twenty-three blue-ink signatures ("7" to "9") on a red-stitched ball (no manufacturer's stampings visible), including Ford, Berra (sweet spot), Mantle (clubhouse signature, sweet spot), Maris (clubhouse signature, opposite sweet spot), Blanchard, Bouton, Bridges, Skowron, Terry, Kubek, Howard, Richardson, Linz, Tresh, Lopez, and Boyer. Vg-Ex. 1962: Twenty-three blue-ink signatures ("6" to "9") on a Rawlings "Accelerated" ball, including Berra (sweet spot), Ford, Mantle (clubhouse signature, sweet spot), Maris (clubhouse signature), Howard, Boyer, Skowron, Terry, Richardson, Bouton, Lopez, Stafford, and Coates. Vg-Ex. 1962: Twenty-three blue-ink signatures ("6" to "10") on a Rawlings "Accelerated" ball, including Berra (sweet spot), Ford, Mantle (clubhouse signature, sweet spot), Maris (clubhouse signature), Howard, Boyer, Skowron, Terry, Richardson, Bouton, Lopez, Stafford, Reed, Sheldon, and Coates.
