1888 N172 Old Judge Billy Sunday

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $823

Graded GOOD 30 by SGC. Outstanding card with Ex-Mt or better appearance. 1888 N172 Old Judge of legendary ballplayer-turned-evangelist Billy Sunday (leaning on bat pose), center fielder, with the Pittsburgh Nationals. With a copyright date of 1888, the card was issued during Sunday's first season with Pittsburgh; up to that point, he had spent his entire Major League career as a backup outfielder with the powerhouse Chicago Nationals. It is interesting to note that Goodwin used a photograph of Sunday in his Chicago uniform, probably because a photo of him with Pittsburgh was not yet available, and airbrushed "Pittsburgh" on his uniform. This is a magnificent example from this landmark issue of one of the nineteenth century's best-known players. A very sharp-looking card, with particularly wide borders, four sharp corners, no creases, and featuring Sunday posed in front of an elaborate studio backdrop. This card has been technically downgraded by SGC due to minor back damage. If not for a small piece of clear tape and a glue stain on the blank reverse (which naturally comes with the territory when dealing with Old Judges), this card would have easily graded Ex-Mt or better. This is a great card! Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600.
