1952 Topps #130 Sheldon Jones Original Card Artwork - One of Only Two Examples Known!

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,994

Presented is the actual original artwork (approximately 2-7/8 x 4-1/4 inches) used to produce card #130 Sheldon Jones from the 1952 Topps set. Original artworks from this set are virtually nonexistent. This is one of only two 1952 Topps original artwork examples known to survive. It is not just a great rarity; as an original artwork from the most historically important and groundbreaking set in bubble-gum card history, it is one of the great prizes of all Topps baseball-card original artworks.

Original artwork for baseball cards has long been an extremely popular area of collecting. Examples of original artworks to many different card sets are known, including 1934-36 Diamond Stars issued by National Chicle, 1952 Bowman baseball and football artworks, 1953, late 1950s and early 1960s Topps artworks, and paintings from many nonsport sets such as Mars Attacks!, Wacky Packs, and even the artwork from the classic 1941 Lone Ranger Gum cards produced by Gum, Inc. In almost all cases, if one artwork from a set is known, many are known. It is extremely unusual for just one or two examples of original art to survive from any set. It is usually "feast or famine." That is simply the nature of original card art. 1952 Topps is a notable exception.

This original flexichrome artwork is in Excellent condition with original paste-on production stats with player name and team intact. The number “50” is written in pencil on the blank reverse. Purchased from REA’s January 1994 auction, this original flexichrome artwork has not seen the light of day since, and has been consigned to this auction directly from the original purchaser. We have not seen or heard of another example since. This outstanding and extremely important original 1952 Topps baseball-card artwork is a museum-quality baseball-card art piece, and the key rarity to the assembly of a complete run by year of examples of Topps baseball-card artworks. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $3,000+.
