1952 Bowman Proof Card #2 Bobby Thomson
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $4,113
1952 Bowman production proof card of #2 Bobby Thomson. This is an extraordinary rarity of enormous significance to Bowman's baseball-card issues. This production proof card is a full-color giant version of Bobby Thomson's 1952 Bowman card. It is the same size as the larger-format 1953 Bowmans (2.5 x 3.75 inches), and features the same image which appears on the 1952 Bowman. This proof card (and the few others known) originated many years ago directly from the files of Bowman's George Moll. It is a certainty that these were early production design samples for either 1952 or 1953 Bowman baseball. We believe they were actually produced late in 1952 (or early in 1953) not as an alternate 1952 Bowman design, but as a prototype for the 1953 set in response to the great success of the larger 1952 Topps cards. In 1953, of course, Bowman did, indeed, go with a larger format for the very first time, as the larger-format Topps were so well received by youngsters. The offered example has been encapsulated as Authentic by SGC (SGC does not assign numerical grades to proof cards). The card is bright and crisp, with vibrant colors, in essentially perfect condition, and with handwritten Bowman notations (in the same hand as appears on all Bowman prototype cards) on reverse which reads "Bob Thomson NY Giants 1952 #2." (Interesting provenance note: This very card was purchased directly from George Moll by future REA president Robert Lifson in the 1970s, and has privately changed hands just twice over the years since.) This is a fascinating example of this unusual Bowman production design proof card, which is certainly rare and very likely unique. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,113
