1949 Bowman #214 Richie Ashburn Rookie - PSA NM-MT 8
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,293
Graded NM-MT 8 by PSA. Of the 257 examples graded by PSA, only one has ever been graded higher. Stunning high-grade 1949 Bowman rookie card of Hall of Famer Richie Ashburn. This is one of Ashburn’s most striking and popular cards, and one of the great classics of postwar bubble-gum cards. This is not only an important card in general, it is a rare high-number card in the 1949 Bowman series, and one of the key cards in the entire set. 1949 Bowmans have always posed a problem for condition-conscious collectors. In addition to the many normal problems encountered with this issue (excessive toning, general wear from fragile paper stock, soft corners, centering issues, and print lines), collectors also have to deal with the wildly varying degrees of print quality that characterize the set. It is easy to see why 1949 Bowmans are one of the most difficult of all issues to collect in high grade. The offered example has a perfectly crisp image, with flawless registration, and bright, bold colors. Perfectly clean front and back, with four sharp corners (a very slight hint of wear in the lower left), and centered towards the bottom right. The reverse is perfectly clean with bright, bold print. Pack-fresh, crisp, high-grade example of Richie Ashburn’s rookie card. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,293
