1939 Play Ball #92 Ted Williams Rookie - PSA NM-MT 8
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,819
Graded NM-MT 8 by PSA. Exceptionally high grade example of this key prewar card featuring Ted Williams in his rookie season. Of the 600+ examples of this card that have been graded in the history of PSA, only twelve have ever been graded higher (eleven PSA 9s and one PSA 10). The 1939 Play Ball Ted Williams rookie has always been recognized as one of vintage-card collecting's great classics. This is an extremely strong example. Crisp and clean. The card displays four sharp corners and a crystal clear image featuring the "Splendid Splinter" in his familiar swing-thru pose, and is centered slightly towards the top right. The reverse of the card is clean and boldly printed, with only a single very tiny pinpoint spot (possibly natural to the paper stock and mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy). It is fascinating to note that the text on the back of this rookie card reports that Ted "has a great future according to experts." This is a spectacular high-grade example of one of the key cards from the 1939 Play Ball set and one of the most popular cards of the era. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000.
