1933 R319 Goudey Gum Partial Set Including Ruth and Gehrig (183 of 240)

Starting Bid - $1,500, Sold For - $8,813

This very attractive collection of 183 different low- to mid-grade 1933 Goudeys includes forty-two Hall of Famers, highlighted by #92 Lou Gehrig and #181 Babe Ruth. These cards are part of an original "childhood" collection consigned to this auction, that was assembled in 1933, and saved for decades by the family of the original owner. 10% range from Ex to Nr/Mt, 55% range from Vg to Vg-Ex/Ex, and 35% are in lesser grades (mostly downgraded for ink writing on the cards). Accompanying this collection was an astounding 162 1933 Goudey wrappers, which are offered as a separate lot in this auction and which no doubt originally housed these very cards in 1933. We have selected three cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC (Speaker, Gehrig, and Ferrell). Keys: #1 Bengough (Gd-Vg), 2 Vance (Vg-Ex), 5 Herman (Vg), 7 Lyons (Vg), 19 Dickey (Vg), 20 Terry (Vg), 22 Traynor (Vg-Ex), 23 Cuyler (Gd-Vg), 25 Waner (Vg), 29 Foxx (Vg), 31 Lazzeri (Vg), 35 Simmons (Vg), 42 Collins (Vg-Ex), 44 Bottomley (Vg-Ex), 47 Manush (Vg-Ex), 49 Frisch (Vg/Vg-Ex), 56 Ruffing (25/75 L/R, otherwise Ex-Mt), 60 Hoyt (Gd-Vg), 63 Cronin (Vg-Ex), 64 Grimes (Vg-Ex), 73 Haines (Vg), 74 Rixey (Nr/Mt), 76 Cochrane (Vg-Ex), 79 Faber (75/25 L/R, otherwise Vg-Ex), 89 Speaker (SGC EX 60), 92 Gehrig (SGC VG/EX 50), 102 Jackson (Vg-Ex), 107 Manush (90/10 L/R, otherwise Vg-Ex), 109 Cronin (blue ink on front, otherwise Ex-Mt), 110 Goslin (Vg-Ex), 117 Maranville (Vg), 119 Hornsby (Vg-Ex/Ex), 125 Terry (Gd), 134 Rice (Vg-Ex/Ex), 138 Pennock (Vg/Vg-Ex), 181 Ruth ("Braves" written in blue ink on his jersey, otherwise Vg/Vg-Ex), 188 Hornsby ("Browns" written in blue ink on his jersey, otherwise Vg-Ex), 189 Cronin (Vg), 197 Ferrell (SGC EX+ 70), 202 Hartnett (Vg-Ex), 211 Wilson (Vg-Ex), 220 Grove (Vg/Vg-Ex), 222 Gehringer (black ink on the back, otherwise Ex), and 227 Herman (10/90 L/R, otherwise Vg-Ex/Ex). The following fifty-seven numbers are missing for completion (with Hall of Famers and stars also noted by name): #53 Ruth, 82, 99, 103 Combs, 106 Lajoie, 116, 123, 126, 127 Ott, 128 Klein, 129, 133 Lindstrom, 139, 140, 144 Ruth, 145, 146, 147 Durocher, 149 Ruth, 150, 152, 154 Foxx, 156, 157, 158 Berg, 159, 160 Gehrig, 161, 162, 163, 164 Waner, 165 Sewell, 166, 176, 178, 179, 180, 187 Manush, 194 Averill, 195, 198, 201, 204, 207 Ott, 213, 216 Gomez, 217 Crosetti, 219, 221, 223 Dean, 224, 229 Vaughan, 230 Hubbell, 231, 234 Hubbell, 236, and 240. 1933 Goudeys are one of card collecting's most popular and classic sets. This is an extremely attractive collection that has remained untouched since the 1930s and could serve as the foundation for the building of an exceptional mid-grade set (the 183 cards represent 76% of a set). Total 183 cards. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000. SOLD FOR $8,813
