1936 V355 World Wide Gum Near-Complete Set (130 of 135)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $9,400

1936 V355 World Wide Gum near-set (130 of 135 cards) missing just five cards for completion (#54, 75 Medwick, 78, 101, and 132). This set has an extraordinarily high concentration of Hall of Famers. The thirty-eight Hall of Famers in the set are highlighted by Joe DiMaggio's rookie card and one of Lou Gehrig's rarest cards. One of the most difficult to complete sets of the 1930s, the V355 World Wide Gum set is all the more noteworthy as it features very unusual photographs which appear in no other card issues. We have selected twenty-nine Hall of Famers to be graded and encapsulated by PSA. The PSA grading composite follows: One NM 7 (MC): #85 Bottomley (virtually no top border). Two EX-MT 6: #77 Simmons and 131 Lopez. One EX+ 5.5: #108 McKechnie. Three EX 5: #107 Frisch, 113 Appling, and 130 Harris. One VG-EX+ 4.5: #124 Schalk. Eleven VG-EX 4: #13 Klein, 16 Herman, 25 Durocher, 34 Dickey, 41 Greenberg, 42 Gehringer, 43 Goslin, 45 Cochrane, 88 Grove, 110 Mack, and 129 Maranville. Two VG+ 3.5: #19 Dean and 39 Hoyt. Two PR 1: #57 Hartnett and 96 Gehrig (a very presentable low-grade example with evenly rounded corners, a few minor creases, and slight even toning). Six Authentic: All nice-looking cards but each deemed trimmed: #46 Cronin, 47 Foxx, 51 DiMaggio, 55 Cuyler, 65 Lindstrom, and 73 Manush. Ungraded Keys: #2 Waner (Vg), 6 Vaughan (possible slight trim, otherwise Vg-Ex), 7 Terry (miscut along the top, otherwise Vg), 53 McCarthy (Vg-Ex), 56 Gomez (Pr), 93 Haines (Gd), 94 Hafey (Gd), and 102 Ruffing (Vg). The balance of the cards grade as follows: 62% range from Vg to Vg-Ex (with a few slightly better), and 38% appear at a glance to be in a similar grade, but upon very close inspection have a very slight trim. (If submitted for grading, these cards would receive a grade of "Authentic.") This is an exceptionally attractive near-complete set of this rare, unusually designed, and very substantial 1930s Canadian Goudey issue. Accompanying the set is the extremely rare World Wide Gum Baseball wrapper (Ex condition). Total 131 items (130 cards and 1 wrapper). Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000+. SOLD FOR $9,400
