1934 R320 Goudey #2 Mickey Cochrane - SGC NM/MT 88

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,528

Graded NM/MT 88 by SGC. This card was one of the greatest highlights of a large totally untouched collection of 1933 and 1934 Goudey gum cards consigned to this auction, which was saved for decades by the family of the original owner. When we first looked at the collection (which included hundreds of cards, all completely unseen since the 1930s, all offered in this auction), this card jumped out as one of the most important cards in the collection due to its extraordinary condition. This card looks like it was just pulled from a pack! It is gorgeous! This pack-fresh gem is perfectly centered with four razor-sharp corners, snow-white borders, and deep, rich colors. The portrait image is bright and crisp with perfect registry. The reverse is also essentially unimprovable with extremely bold green-on-white printing. This card looks like it traveled direct from a pack in the 1930s to this auction, with no stops in between, and the fact is that it practically did. All Goudeys are extremely rare to find in NM/MT condition, but as card #2 in the 1934 Goudey set, Cochrane is a special condition rarity, and a particularly extraordinary card to find in such incredibly high grade. If this card had come back graded MINT we wouldn't have batted an eye. Spectacular NM/MT example bordering on Mint territory. The equivalent SMR value for the assigned grade is $2,000. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $1,528
