1927 FC59 Honey Boy Ice Cream Complete SGC-Graded Set (21) Including Babe Ruth
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,113
Complete set of twenty-one 1927 FC59 Honey Boy Ice Cream cards, highlighted by Babe Ruth and Tris Speaker, entirely graded and encapsulated POOR 10 by SGC. This is an extremely rare set! Honey Boys are almost never seen or offered, but are well known by advanced collectors both for their rarity and memorable product name, as well as for being one of the very few card sets issued during the late 1920s. This 21-card set was issued by The Purity Ice Cream Co. of Winnipeg, Canada, in 1927, to promote the company's Honey Boy Ice Cream product. The set features mostly Major Leaguers but also includes a few Canadian League players, among them "Snake" Siddle of the Arenas club. Honey Boys measure 1-5/8 x 2-3/8 inches. They are considerably rarer than almost all of the few card issues dating from the 1920s. The front pictures a square black-and-white portrait with just the player's name printed below. The reverse of each card features advertising for the Purity Ice Cream Co., with an offer of a brick of "Delicious Honey Boy Ice Cream" for each full set of twenty-one cards returned to the company. This is the first complete "Honey Boy" set we have ever offered. Condition: Most of the cards have a much better appearance than their assigned grades may suggest, but due to the hole-punch cancellation from the company's redemption program and back damage from scrapbook removal each card has been accurately downgraded by SGC to POOR 10. The grades listed below for the key cards are provided to communicate appearance without reference to the hole-punch cancellation or back damage. Keys: #1 Maxwell (Pr), 5 Siddle (Vg), 10 Speaker (HOF, Fr), 11 Sisler (HOF, Fr), 13 Roush (HOF, Fr), 14 Ruth (Vg+ with no back damage), 15 Heilmann (HOF, Vg), 17 Collins (HOF, Vg), 18 Alexander (HOF, Vg), 19 Bancroft (HOF, Vg), and 20 Frisch (HOF, Gd). This is a virtually unique opportunity to acquire a complete set of this fascinating and extremely rare prewar food issue. Total 21 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
