1886 N172 Old Judge "Brownie Champs" SGC-Graded Complete Set (13)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $7,638

The 1886 "Brownie Champs" set has always been among the most distinctive and popular of all N172 Old Judges. Each card from this highly sought-after Old Judge subset features portraits of players from this legendary Championship team. Presented is a complete set of all thirteen scarce N172 "Brownie Champs," including Hall of Famer Commy Comiskey, each graded and encapsulated by SGC. Two cards are EX+ 70, three are VG/EX 50, four are VG 40, one is GOOD 30, and three are graded FAIR 20. SGC Condition Report: Two EX+ 70: Bob Caruthers and Christian Von Der Ahe. Three VG/EX 50: Dave Foutz, Will Gleason, and Tip O'Neil. Four VG 40: Nat Hudson, Rudy Kemmler, Arlie Latham, and Nick Nicol. One GOOD 30: Yank Robinson. Three FAIR 20: Doc Bushong, Commy Comiskey (the key card in the set has reasonably strong contrast, no creases, very little wear to the four square corners, and blue ink notations on the reverse), and Curt Welsh. This is a very impressive complete collection of "Brownie Champs," with most cards (as is often the case with Old Judges) having an appearance superior to their technically accurate assigned grades. The distinctive style of the set makes this series of great interest not just to N172 set collectors, but to collectors who are interested in having one of the most significant and earliest subsets issued by Old Judge, featuring one of the most celebrated teams of the nineteenth century. Total 13 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000.
