1886 N172 Old Judge Chris Von Der Ahe

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $940

Graded VG 40 by SGC. Rare sample card of St. Louis Browns owner Chris Von Der Ahe from the N172 Old Judge Brownie Champs series. The Brownie Champs set has always been among the most distinctive and popular of all Old Judges. Von Der Ahe was one of the most prominent team owners of the nineteenth century, and is universally recognized as the second most desirable card in the entire Brownie Champs set (behind only Hall of Famer and future prominent team-owner Charles Comiskey). This card is well centered, with reasonably strong contrast, no creases, and very little wear to the four square corners. The blank reverse has a few minor flaws common to Old Judges, including some light soiling and a small area of paper loss in the center. We always try to offer a few classic N172s individually to show collectors that it is possible to collect the important pre-1900 cards without spending a fortune. This is a very attractive example of one of the key cards from the classic 1886 Brownies Champs subset which features portraits of players from this legendary Championship team. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000.
