1916 M101-5 Sporting News Hall of Fame Rookie Card Collection Including Stengel (4)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,115
Collection of four high-grade Hall of Famers from the 1916 M101-5 Sporting News set, all highlights but of particular note is Casey Stengel, each graded and encapsulated by SGC (except one PSA). Each of these cards is widely recognized as the rookie card of the respective Hall of Famer. The Casey Stengel is a fascinating and yet slightly overlooked card. Stengel appears in the 1910 T210 Old Mill Tobacco set as a Minor Leaguer, and his T210 card understandably generates a tremendous amount of attention (and sells for tens of thousands of dollars when available), but this M101-5 Sporting News is also of enormous significance as his first card as a Major Leaguer. 1) #171 Casey Stengel (EX 60, sharp-looking card of the "Ole Professor" as a player before his managing days). 2) #142 Eppa Rixey (PSA VG-EX 4, centered to the left, with even wear on the corners, tiny corner crease in lower right). 3) #166 George Sisler (VG/EX 50, centered towards the bottom left, light even wear on the corners, great clarity). 4) #9 Dave Bancroft (EX/NM 80, well centered, with a flawless image, light wear to the square corners). All the cards have blank backs. This is a very sharp-looking high-grade collection of these classic real-photo cards, comprised exclusively of Hall of Famers. Many collectors (and we are in agreement) think this issue, compared to other sets of the era, represents one of the best values among classic vintage cards, especially regarding Hall of Famers. Total 4 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $2,115
