1916 M101-5 Sporting News Complete PSA-Graded Set Minus 4 (196/200)

Starting Bid - $10,000, Sold For - $64,625

Near-complete set of 1916 M101-5 Sporting News, missing just four cards for completion (#86 Jackson, 151 Ruth, and 176 Thorpe, all of which are offered as separate lots in this auction, and also #186 Wheat). This is the finest M101-5 set we have ever seen! All 196 cards have been encapsulated and graded by PSA. The 1916 M101-5 set is one of the most highly regarded and comprehensive baseball-card sets of the era. The set is commonly referred to as issued by The Sporting News, but, as most collectors know, the set was actually issued by several different companies. Cards were printed with advertising for regional issuers as well as with blank banks. All the cards in this set have blanks backs. The M101-5 Sporting News set is universally recognized as one of the most significant of all prewar baseball-card issues. Very few complete sets exist. This is the only completely PSA-graded M101-5 Sporting News set (minus four cards) ever assembled. This is a world-class set of one of the most important and rarely offered of all prewar baseball card sets, including all the top stars of the day. The set is loaded with highlights, including twenty-nine Hall of Famers (including Honus Wagner, Nap Lajoie, Casey Stengel, Walter Johnson, etc.), extremely desirable key cards of "Black Sox" players (Eddie Cicotte, Hap Felsch, and Buck Weaver), and many other key and star cards. This is an extraordinary set!

Condition Composite: The set includes three PSA 9s, sixty-seven PSA 8s, eighty-six PSA 7s, twenty-nine PSA 6s, eight PSA 5s, and three PSA 4s. The cards, as well as the grades, speak for themselves.

The PSA grading report is as follows: Three MINT 9: #111 (OC), 118, and 143. Sixty-seven NM-MT 8: #12, 14, 18, 20, 24, 27 (OC), 29, 31 Cicotte (Black Sox), 34 (OC), 35 Comiskey (OC), 36, 37, 40, 41, 42 Crawford (OC), 44, 45, 46, 48, 50, 56 Faber, 58 (OC), 75, 77, 78, 80, 81, 82, 85 Huggins, 88, 97, 98, 99, 100, 104, 107, 109 Maranville, 114 McGraw, 116, 119, 129, 131, 134, 135, 144 Robinson, 145, 146 Roush, 148, 149, 153, 156, 158, 160, 162, 165, 166 Sisler, 167, 168, 169, 171 Stengel, 173, 179, 183, 189, 191, 194, and 195.
