1887 N690 Kalamazoo Bats Joseph Mulvey

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $2,644

Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. Don't be fooled by the SGC grade! This is a gorgeous card! Extremely striking Kalamazoo Bats tobacco card of A's third baseman Joseph Mulvey. An ideal example with outstanding contrast, strong corners, and tremendous detail, showcasing the Philadelphia ballpark's grandstands in the background, which is one of the trademark characteristics of Kalamazoo Bats. Like many nineteenth-century cards, this card has light glue residue on the reverse from long ago being glued into a scrapbook. This comes with the territory with pre-1900 cards and is responsible for the substantial technical downgraded by SGC. This is a beautiful card that aside from the glue on the reverse has a couple of horizontal creases (only one of which can even be seen from the front and is very light) and is otherwise in Vg-Ex condition. Kalamazoo Bats are noted both for their great rarity and unique design. A very clean and attractive sample from this important nineteenth-century tobacco issue. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $2,644
