1912 T202 Hassan Triple Folder Rarity: "Too Late For Devlin" Mathewson/Devlin (Rustlers)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $940

Graded EX 5 by PSA. One of only six examples at this level, with just three graded higher. Presented is a magnificent high-grade example of one of the key rare cards from the classic T202 Hassan Triple Folders set: #126 "Too Late For Devlin" featuring Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson and Arthur Devlin (Rustlers) on the end panels. This card has the lowest number of examples graded in the PSA Population Report for all T202s in the entire set, and is only now beginning to be recognized as possibly the single rarest card in the set. The T202 "Too Late For Devlin" center panel card was issued in two versions, both with Devlin and Mathewson on the end panels. One version has Devlin on the Giants. After he was traded to the Rustlers, the team designation on this card was changed to identify him as a member of the Rustlers. Over a period of many years, the grading service population reports sometimes provide extremely significant statistical information about the relative rarity of cards, usually confirming collector's long-held opinions, and sometimes providing new insight. Historically, collectors have identified the Devlin with the Giants variation as the rarer of the two, but as of this writing only nineteen Too Late For Devlin/Rustlers cards have been graded by PSA, and twenty-one Too Late For Devlins/Giants cards have been graded, suggesting that the Rustlers variety may in fact be the rarer of the two. Both varieties are among the lowest population cards of all T202s, and the PSA Population Report confirms that both varieties are extremely rare cards in the set. This example is bright and crisp, with brilliant colors, four square corners, and centered to the bottom. This is an attractive high-grade example of one of the T202 Hassan Triple Folder set's rarest cards. As of this writing, the SMR lists this card in this grade (presumably in error) at only $600. It is obviously worth a multiple of this listed value. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $940
