1911 T205 Gold Border Collection Including Three Mathewsons (103) Plus 22 Caramel Cards
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,525
Original-owner collection of 103 T205 Gold Border tobacco cards (61 different and 42 duplicates), highlighted by nineteen Hall of Famers including three Christy Mathewsons, and accompanied by an additional twenty-two miscellaneous 1910-era cards from four different caramel card issues including two Ty Cobbs, for a total of 125 cards. This is an original "childhood" collection, assembled in 1911 and saved in the family of the original owner. 25% range from Vg-Ex to Ex, 17% grade Vg, 18% grade Gd, and 40% in lesser grades. T205 Gold Borders Highlights: two Bender (Pr and trimmed), two Bresnahan/mouth closed (Vg and Gd), Chance (Pr), two Clarke (Vg-Ex and Vg), Collins/mouth closed (Pr), Collins/mouth open (Vg), two Evers (Vg and Fr), three Marquard (one Fr and two Pr), three Mathewson (Vg-Ex, Fr, Pr), two McGraw (Vg-Ex and trimmed), Wheat (possible slight trim, otherwise Vg-Ex), and White/Pirates (Pr). Great-looking group, with many highlights, that could easily serve as a solid foundation for the building of a very attractive low- to mid-grade set. The twenty-two additional cards that accompany consist of the following: 1) 1909 "E95 Philadelphia Caramel notebook cover cutouts" (8 cards, blank-back, thin stock "cards" which are not truly E95s but which were long ago handcut from "Base Ball Series" notebook covers): two Cobb (HOF), Crawford (HOF), two Devlin, Krause, McIntyre, and Merkle. 2) 1910 "E96 Philadelphia Caramel notebook cover cutouts" (5 cards, blank-back, thin stock "cards" which are not truly E96s but which were long ago handcut from "Base Ball Series" notebook covers): two Baker (HOF), two Donovan, and Tinker (HOF). 3) 1909 E91-B American Caramel (8 cards): Brown (HOF), Chance (HOF), Doyle, Krause, Marquard (HOF), Reulbach, Steinfeldt, and Tenney. 4) 1910 E91-C American Caramel (1 card): Delahanty. These additional 22 cards range in grade from Poor to Very Good (averaging Fr-Gd overall). Total 125 cards (103 T205s plus 22 1910-era cards from two different manufacturers). Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $3,525
