1909-1911 T206 Walter Johnson - Rare "Drum" Back
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $38,188
Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Only example graded by SGC and none graded by PSA. Hands-at-chest pose of Hall of Fame pitcher Walter Johnson with the extremely rare Drum Cigarettes advertisement on the back. This is easily one of the most extraordinary of all T206 front and rare advertising back combinations. Drum backs are unusual and extremely rare. Even a sample of a common player is one of the most difficult to find of all T206 advertising backs. A T206 Drum back example featuring a key Hall of Famer such as Walter Johnson is almost unheard of among serious tobacco card collectors. The card has very strong eye appeal, both front and back, with no creases, bold color, perfect registration, and light, even wear to the corners. The centering left to right (approximately 20/80) is solely responsible for this card being downgraded by SGC. It is otherwise in Excellent condition. Both the front and back are bright and clean. The Drum advertisement is perfectly centered, and the print on the reverse is flawless and bold (both of which are particularly desirable qualities for a rare T206 back). This is an exceptional high-grade example of one of the rarest and most desirable T206 Hall of Famer front and rare advertising back combinations in existence. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
