1909-1911 T206 Rare Backs Collection Including Uzit and Lenox (36)

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $19,975

Presented is an extraordinary and unique collection of thirty-six T206 tobacco cards, each with a different advertisement on the back, including the extremely rare "Old Mill Brown," "Lenox Brown," "Uzit,” and “Red Hindu" advertising backs. This is a miraculous collection! We have never seen or even heard of the assembly of a complete collection of T206 advertising backs, but suspect that may soon change. This collection is not complete, but it is very close. In fact, this collection is closer to completion than any T206 advertising-back collection we have ever seen or offered. It is missing only the Ty Cobb with Ty Cobb back, Broad Leaf 460, and Drum for completion, and, incredibly, each of these rarities (as well as the famous Old Mill overprint) is offered separately in this auction. The consignor of this lot long ago decided to try to assemble as many T206 cards as possible with different backs. Over a period of many years he was extremely successful, and this collection is the result of his considerable efforts. He was very discriminating in terms of condition and only added examples with tremendous eye-appeal. The fronts of the cards in this collection are also of very special note, as included are four Hall of Famers (Bender, Crawford, Griffith, and Marquard), Chase, and two Southern Leaguers. Clearly, this is not a random group! Twenty-one of the thirty-six cards in this collection have been graded by either PSA (12) or SGC (9). The collection consists of the following in the order of scarcity (with the order of rarity provided by the T206 Museum website): 1) Old Mill (Brown): Smith/Atlanta (SGC Auth); 2) Lenox (Brown): Marquard/pitching (HOF, SGC FAIR 20); 3) Uzit: Manning/pitching (SGC VG 40); 4) Hindu (Red): Bender/no trees (HOF, SGC GOOD 30); 5) Piedmont 350-460 (Factory 42, Dist. 4, NC): Ames/hands above head (Ex); 6) Blank Back: Manion (SGC Auth); 7) Lenox (Black): Stovall/batting (SGC EX 60); 8) Broad Leaf 350: Barry (SGC EX 60); 9) Carolina Brights: Burchell (PSA EX 5); 10) Sovereign 460: Bridwell/cap (PSA EX 5); 11) Hindu (Brown): Bell/hands above head (SGC VG 40); 12) American Beauty 460: Howell/hands at waist (Vg-Ex); 13) Cycle 460: Tannehill/Tannehill on front (SGC VG/EX 50); 14) Tolstoi: Overall/hands waist level (PSA EX 5); 15) El Principe De Gales: Burch/fielding (Ex); 16) American Beauty 350 (no Frame): Crawford/bat (HOF, Vg); 17) American Beauty 350 (Frame): Milligan (PSA EX 5); 18) Cycle 350: Phelan (PSA EX 5); 19) Old Mill (Southern League): Danville (Vg-Ex); 20) Sweet Caporal 350-460 (Factory 25, Dist. 2, VA): O'Leary/hands on knees (PSA EX 5); 21) Old Mill (Black): Wright (Vg-Ex/Ex); 22) Sovereign 350: Hulswitt (Ex); 23) Sweet Caporal Overprint 150: Manning/batting (PSA EX 5); 24) Sweet Caporal Overprint 350-460: Davis/Davis on front (PSA EX 5); 25) Sweet Caporal 350-460: Hummel (PSA EX 5); 26) Sovereign 150: Lobert (Ex); 27) Polar Bear: Carr (PSA EX 5); 28) Sweet Caporal 150 (Factory 25, Dist. 2, VA): Leifield/pitching (PSA EX 5); 29) Sweet Caporal 350 (Factory 25, Dist. 2, VA): Mowrey (Vg-Ex/Ex); 30) Piedmont 150 (Factory 25, Dist. 2, VA): Liebhardt (Ex); 31) Sweet Caporal 150 (Factory 30, Dist. 2, NY): Murphy/throwing (PSA EX 5); 32) Sweet Caporal 350-460 (Factory 30, Dist. 2, NY): Chase/holding trophy (PSA EX 5); 33) Piedmont 350-460 (Factory 25): Bescher/hands in air (PSA EX 5); 34) Sweet Caporal 350 (Factory 30, Dist. 2, NY): Campbell (Vg-Ex), 35) Piedmont 350 (Factory 25, Dist. 2, VA): Lake/NY (Vg-Ex/Ex); 36) Sweet Caporal Overprint 350-460 (Factory 30 and 42): Griffith/batting (HOF, Fr; this card was pointed out to us by our consignor as being unique because it is not listed as one of the backs on the T206 Museum website, but after further research with many sophisticated T206 rare back collectors, we have come to the conclusion that although it is unusual, it is not truly a newly discovered back rarity, but is a fascinating oddity). Counting all possible back variations (brand names, printing colors, and factory numbers), there are a total of thirty-eight universally recognized different T206 backs (not counting the virtually unique overprints). This collection represents an extraordinary and unique collecting opportunity. The presentation of this collection is all the more remarkable in that examples of the Ty Cobb with Ty Cobb back, Broad Leaf 460, and Drum Cigarettes, as well as the legendary T206 Old Mill overprint, are offered as separate lots in this auction. In the history of collecting, we believe this is unprecedented. Total 36 cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $19,975
