1911 T208 Cullivan's Fireside Topsy Hartsel

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,350

Encapsulated Authentic by SGC. T208 Cullivan's Fireside tobacco card of outfielder Topsy Hartsel from the Philadelphia Athletics. Bright and crisp, with a very clean and crisp portrait, and a perfect back with no stains and a very boldly printed advertisement for Fireside tobacco. This card has a natural rough "diamond cut" along the bottom border, an insignificant light diagonal corner crease in the upper left. It has been designated "Authentic" by SGC (as opposed to receiving a numerical grade) due to a trim across the top border only. It is clear from studying T208s that quality control with reference to cutting was not great, resulting in many cards having diamond cuts and sometimes with one extra large border at the top or bottom. We note that the T208 Davis card offered in this auction has a huge oversized top border; we think that this Topsy Hartsel card also originally had a huge top border, that was long ago clipped (not to maliciously trim the card, but to allow it to fit into a plastic page, or simply make it look more rectangular in light of the extreme original diamond cut of this card). This is a very attractive card, accurately graded "Authentic" but with a Vg-Ex appearance. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
