2008 Derek Jeter New York Yankees Game-Used Road Jersey with Steiner LOA
Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $10,575
Exceptional New York Yankees road jersey worn by team captain Derek Jeter during the historic 2008 season. Ideally, this jersey was obtained by our consignor directly from Steiner Sports (the official collectibles company of the New York Yankees, which exclusively markets all authentic game-used Yankees jerseys) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the company, as well as a corresponding "game-used" hologram label affixed to the manufacturer's tag on the left front tail (the LOA can be viewed on our website). This is one of the most desirable Derek Jeter jerseys imaginable due to the fact that it dates to the final season played in the original Yankee Stadium and, as such, features two one-year-only patches. The grey knit jersey is lettered "New York" on the front and features the number "2" on the reverse. All letters and numerals are appliqud in navy on white tackle twill. A special Yankee Stadium commemorative patch appears on the left sleeve, as does a black arm band worn in honor of Bobby Murcer, who passed away on July 18, 2008. Because 2008 was the club's final season at the original Yankee Stadium, Major League Baseball arranged for the 2008 All-Star Game to held at the famed "House That Ruth Built." Accordingly, a 2008 "All-Star" Game patch adorns the right sleeve. A "Majestic" label is located on the left front tail, as are a "48" size tag and "2008" year tag. The jersey is completely original, with no alterations, and displays light wear throughout. Jeter closed out his final season at Yankee Stadium in fine fashion, batting an even .300, with 11 home runs, and 69 RBI. He also reached a number of significant career milestones that season, including his 400th double (June 27th), his 200th home run (July 12th), and most hits (1,271) at Yankee Stadium (September 16th, surpassing Lou Gehrig). Named the American League's starting shortstop in the 2008 All-Star Game, Jeter had a single and a stolen base in three at bats to help lead the American League to a thrilling 4-3 fifteen-innning victory in what many consider to be the greatest midsummer classic on record. Jeter, who has been the Yankees captain since 2003, is universally regarded as the greatest shortstop in team history. A ten-time All Star, his numerous achievements include the 1996 Rookie of the Year Award, the 2000 All-Star Game and World Series MVP Awards (the first time a players has won both awards in the same season), four Gold Glove Awards, three Silver Slugger Awards, and, of course, five World Championships over the course of his fifteen seasons. In 2009 he surpassed Lou Gehrig as the team's all-time hit leader and, barring injury, will soon become a member of baseball's elite 3,000 Hit Club. Like Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, and Mantle before him, Jeter personifies the current Yankees dynasty and it seems assured that one day his plaque will hang both in Yankee Stadium's Monument Park and Cooperstown. This is only the second Derek Jeter New York Yankees game-used jersey we have ever offered. The first, which was also accompanied by a Steiner LOA, was a 2002 home jersey that appeared as Lot 1286 in our 2007 auction and sold for $15,275. This is an outstanding Jeter jersey in all respects and one that has the special significance of dating from the team's final season in Yankee Stadium. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000/$10,000+.
