1910 E93 Standard Caramel Near-Complete Set (29 of 30) Including Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $9,988

Rarely offered near-complete set of E93 Standard Caramel comprised of twenty-nine of the thirty cards in the set, including seventeen Hall of Famers, highlighted by Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, and Cy Young. Missing only one card (McGraw) for completion. Twenty-three cards range in grade from Gd to Vg-Ex (averaging Vg); six are lesser (mostly Poor). These cards are part of one of the most substantial original-owner caramel card collections we have ever offered. The entire collection of over 350 1910-era candy cards (plus over 200 tobacco cards) have been consigned to this auction (all appear in the Internet-only section of the auction), and have been saved for decades by the family of the original owner. This 30-card set was issued in 1910 by the Standard Caramel Co. of Lancaster, PA. This set is closely related to several other candy sets from the era which share the same format and, in many cases, the same player image. Like most 1910-era tobacco and "E" card issues, E93 Standard Caramel Company cards each measure approximately 1.5 x 2.75 inches. The set is comprised almost exclusively of Hall of Famers and stars. This near-set is all the more remarkable in that it is an original "childhood" collection that has remained untouched for one-hundred years! The twenty-nine cards in this lot represent what we consider to be the very best condition example of each different E93 card among the total of 110 E93 cards in the entire collection (The balance of the E93 duplicates from the collection, including five Wagners and three Youngs, are offered as a separate lot in this auction.) We have selected eleven cards from the set to be graded and encapsulated by SGC (submitted by REA). Highlights: Bender (Fr), Brown (Gd), Chance (SGC VG 40), Chase (Vg), Clarke (SGC VG 40), Cobb (SGC VG 40), Collins (Pr), Evers (Vg), Griffith (SGC VG/EX 50), Jennings (Pr-Fr), Joss (SGC VG/EX 50), Lajoie (SGC VG/EX 50), Mathewson (SGC VG 40), Plank (SGC GOOD 30), Tinker (SGC VG 40), Wagner (SGC VG 40), Waddell (Gd), and Young (SGC GOOD 30). Caramel cards in general, because they were issued with candy, one card per package, tend to survive in lesser condition than their more common tobacco card counterparts. This is a magnificent and very rarely seen complete set (minus one) of E93 Standard Caramel, one of the most popular and colorful of all "E" card issues. The equivalent SMR value for the just the eleven SGC-graded cards (not including the 18 ungraded cards) is $9,800. Total 29 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000++. SOLD FOR $9,988
