1911 T3 Turkey Red #9 Ty Cobb

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $4,113

Graded GOOD 30 by SGC. Very attractive T3 of Ty Cobb, the key card of the 1911 Turkey Red Tobacco cabinet card series. Our consignor (a noncollector) discovered this card many years ago behind a picture in a frame. It had been used as the matting in the frame! Fortunately she kept it, put it in a safe place, and just recently ran across it and thought to check to see if maybe it was valuable. We were thrilled to inform her it was, and that if she had to find one T3, it might as well be Ty Cobb, the most valuable card in the set! Turkey Reds are universally recognized as one of the most beautiful and well-made tobacco sets ever issued. Cobb is not just the most valuable card in the set, it also one of the best known and popular of all Ty Cobb cards. This example is bright and clean, both front and back, with bold colors, perfect centering, and a few light creases (mostly in the upper left portion of the card). There is a insignificant tear in the middle of the right edge. Technically in Good condition, this is a conservatively graded card which, aside from the noted flaws, displays as Very Good condition, and provides collectors a rare, relatively affordable alternative to a far more expensive high-grade example without compromising on all of the most important display qualities of the card. This is a very impressive looking, technically medium-grade example of one of card collecting's most classic cards, in an extremely desirable grade. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+. SOLD FOR $4,113
