1934 R136 National Chicle "Sky Birds" Collection (36)
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $3,525
Collection of thirty-six extremely crisp high-grade 1933 "Sky Birds" cards. Issued by National Chicle, the "Sky Birds" set features famous pilots and airplanes of the day, and has always been regarded as one of the most popular of all 1930s nonsport gum-card sets, in part because of its bright colors, sharp details, and popular subject matter. These particularly sharp cards were part of a large totally untouched collection of 1930s gum cards consigned to this auction, which have remained literally untouched since the 1930s, saved by the family of the original owner. We have selected fourteen cards to be graded and encapsulated by PSA. The PSA grades are as follows: Three NM-MT 8: #32 Doolittle (none graded higher), 37 Chamberlain (one of only seven examples at this level, with none graded higher), and 47 Parsons (one of just six examples at this level, with only one graded higher). Five NM 7: #27 Thaw, 29 Bennett, 31 Vaughn, 34 Hawks, and 38 McCudden. Two EX-MT+ 6.5: #26 Bishop and 48 Earhart. Two EX-MT 6: #36 Lindbergh and 46 Boelcke. Two EX 5: #33 Smith and 41 Spad. The balance of the cards grade as follows: ten cards are Ex or slightly better (#3, 6, 7, 25, 28, 30, 35, 43, 44, 45), seven Vg (#39, 42, 54, 55, 56, 57, 63), and five lesser (#9, 40, 52, 68, 72). This is a very attractive high-grade collection, with many cards worthy of inclusion in any world-class "Sky Birds" set or nonsport-card collection. Total 36 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000.
