1986-1987 Larry Bird Boston Celtics Game-Used Road Jersey

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,998

Addendum: We have just been notified by MEARS that there has been an error in dating this jersey. This is not a 1987-1988 jersey as originally described in the catalog, but instead is a 1986-1987 jersey. More specifically, this jersey was produced during the four-month span of January to April in 1987. During the 1987 playoffs, the Celtics switched from a cheesecloth fabric jersey to a mesh jersey, a style which carried over to the following season. Therefore, this jersey, which is the cheesecloth style, cannot date to the 1987-1988 season. Furthermore, the fact that it bears an “87” year tag, as opposed to an “86” year tag, indicates that it was produced during the second half of the 1986-1987 season, but prior to the playoffs. Bird averaged 28.1 points per game during the1986-1987 season, leading the league in minutes per game (40.6), three-point field goals (90), and free-throw percentage (.910). He also led the Celtics to the NBA Finals, where they eventually lost the Lakers in six games.

Boston Celtics road jersey worn by Hall of Fame great Larry Bird during the 1986-1987 basketball season. Graded A8 by MEARS. The green knit jersey is lettered "Celtics" across the front and features the number "33" on both the front and reverse. "Bird" is lettered on the reverse above the number. All letters and numerals are appliqud in white tackle twill. Located on the left front tail are a "Sand-Knit 46" label; a Sand-Knit exclusive label (reading in part: "Designed & Tailored Exclusively for the Boston Celtics"); an "87" year tag; and an additional tag reading "2 inch LB" (denoting two extra body inches). The official NBA patch appears on the upper left front breast. Original and unaltered, the jersey displays light wear throughout. However, though it is as-made, points have been deducted for a minor factory flaw: as MEARS notes in its accompanying LOA, "During application of the Sandknit exclusive tag at the manufacturer, the exclusive tag was stitched down, but missed the jersey fabric on the right edge, which accounts for the loose edge of the tag." Larry Bird entered the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1992 with one of the strongest resumes in recent history. Included among his many accomplishments and honors are three consecutive MVP Awards (1984-1986), the Rookie of the Year Award (1980), twelve NBA All-Star Game selections, nine All-NBA First Team selections, 21,791 career points, and selection to the NBA 50th Anniversary All-Time Team (1996). He also led the Celtics to three World Championships and five Eastern Conference Championships over the course of his thirteen-year career. This is an outstanding Hall of Fame game jersey worn by Bird during one of his finest overall seasons. Graded A8 by Mears (base grade of 10, but minus a combined two points for the light use and loose manufacturer's tag). LOA from Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $1,998
