1957-1958 Topps Basketball Complete SGC-Graded Set (80): #1 SGC Set Registry (GPA 81.98)

Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $11,163

Presented is an exceptional complete set of 1957-1958 Topps Basketball, by far the finest and highest-grade complete set of this classic issue we have ever offered, entirely graded and encapsulated by SGC. This is a stunning set! The set is rated number-one on the "SGC Set Registry" with an overall grade average of 81.98. The few lesser-graded cards have been downgraded for centering, which comes with the territory and is usually a very significant problem with this issue. This complete set has been very carefully assembled by an extremely dedicated collector over a period of many years, and represents a tremendous collecting achievement. This is Topps' first basketball set, and the only basketball set they issued during the 1950s. It apparently did not sell well, as Topps did not follow up with another basketball set until 1969. The set includes the rookie cards of all of the major stars of the era, including Hall of Famers Bill Russell and Bob Cousy. The SGC grades are as follows: One NM/MT+ 92: #55. Nine NM/MT 88: #7, 10 Arizin RC, 37 Hagan RC, 42 Stokes RC, 43 Hundley RC, 44 Gola RC, 57, 66, and 76. Eight NM+ 86: #4, 12, 28 Mikkelsen RC, 40, 53, 59, 77 Russell RC, and 78 Lovellette RC. Twenty-six NM 84: #2, 5 Sharman RC, 8, 9, 13, 17 Cousy RC, 21, 24 Pettit RC, 26, 32 Kerr RC, 33, 36, 39, 45, 46, 47, 51, 52, 56, 62, 64, 65, 67, 71 Twyman RC, 74, and 79. Twenty-five EX/NM 80: #1 Clifton RC, 3, 6, 14, 15 Ramsey RC, 16, 18, 19 Heinsohn RC, 20, 22, 25, 29, 30, 41, 48, 54, 58, 60, 61, 63, 68, 70, 73, 75, and 80 Schnittker RC. Six EX+ 70: #11, 27, 34, 38, 50, and 72. Four EX 60: #23, 35, 49, and 69. One VG/EX 50: #31. 1957 Topps Basketball is well known for production-quality issues, making the assembling of high-quality sets particularly challenging. This is an extraordinary world-class high-grade complete set of this extremely significant basketball issue, far nicer than usually seen (as implied both by its grades and by its #1 ranking on the SGC Set Registry), with all eighty cards encapsulated and graded by SGC. The equivalent SMR value for the individual cards is $15,100. Total 80 cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000+. SOLD FOR $11,163
