Large Football, Basketball, Boxing, Hockey, Golf, and Tennis Signature Collection (287)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $4,406

This diverse signature collection, comprised of 287 signed items, features the autographs of athletes from six different athletic fields: football, basketball, boxing, golf, hockey, and tennis. This collection was assembled by a dedicated old-time autograph collector who was primarily interested in baseball, but, as this collection will attest, he also took the time to seek out the signatures from top stars in other sports as well. One of the most notable aspects of this collection is the fact that most of the signatures were obtained by our consignor's father in person, primarily during the 1950s and 1960s. The vast majority of the pieces (approximately 75%) are cut magazine photos (various sizes), but also included are cuts, photos, first-day covers, cards, and checks. Nearly all of the items are single-signed by the respective player, with just a few signed by more than one person. Most of the athletes represented here were active in their field during the 1950s and 1960s. The signatures, penned in a variety of inks, range from "7" to "10," averaging "9." Football (158 signed items): both professional and college stars are featured; includes Vince Lombardi (1960 Green Bay Packers check), Earl Blaike (handwritten letter on West Point stationery), Steve Own, Elroy Hirsch, Red Grange, Olle Matson, Charles Trippi, Roosevelt Brown, Art Donovan, Alan Ameche, Tom Landry, Bobby Layne, Kyle Rote, Lou Groza, Eddie LaBaron, Alex Webster, Rosy Grier, Emlen Tunnell, Johnny Majors, Joe Namath, Frank Gifford, Johnny Unitas, George Halas, Otto Graham, Paul Brown, Sid Luckman, Sammy Baugh, Y. A. Tittle, Doak Walker, Eddie Robinson (longtime Grambling coach), Glenn Davis, Doc Blanchard, Jim Finks, Jim Brown, Joe Perry, Walter Payton, Jerry Rice, Joe Montana, Brett Favre, Ray Nitschke, Dan Rooney, William Dudley, and Hugh McElhenny. Basketball (104 signed items): includes Red Auerbach, Elgin Baylor, Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving, George Mikan, Slater Martin, John Wooden, Kareem Abdul-Jabber, Ed Macauley, Dolph Schayes, Bob Cousey, Paul Arizin, Tom Gola, Bob Pettit, Walter Dukes, Larry Foust, Jack George, Neil Johnston, Gene Shue, Paul Seymour, Chuck Share, Harry Gallatin, George Yardley, Bob Burrow, Mel Hutchins, Bill Sharman, Kenny Sears, and Bud Palmer. Boxing (4 signed items): Muhammad Ali (photo), Jack Dempsey (magazine photo), Archie Moore (photo), and Jack Sharkey, Jack Dempsey, and Gene Tunney together on a small vintage, but second-generation, photo (the Sharkey signature is dated "4/21/23"). Golf (5 signed items): Arnold Palmer (3x5 card), Greg Norman (British Open cachet), Jack Nicklaus (on a commemorative five-pound note issued by The Royal Bank of Scotland in 2005), Ben Hogan (3x5 card), and Gene Sarazen, Byron Nelson, and Sam Snead together on an Augusta National Golf Club scorecard. Hockey (10 signed items): includes Bobby Hull, Wayne Gretzky, Jean Beliveau, Elmer Lach, Milt Schmidt, Marty Pavelich, Gump Worsley, and Maurice Richard. Tennis (6 signed items): Don Budge (twice), Tony Trabert, Rod Laver, Maureen Connolly, and Nancy Kiner. All of the magazine photos, which are printed on thin paper stock and were removed from their original publication, display minor handling flaws, including tiny edge tears, light creases, and slightly uneven borders, and grade Vg-Ex on average. The remaining items are in Excellent condition overall. Total: 287 signed items. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,406
