1889 N43 Allen & Ginter Complete Set Minus Baseball Players (44 of 50 cards)
Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $4,994
Collection of forty-four different of the fifty cards comprising the N43 Allen & Ginter "World's Champions" second series set, representing the entire set missing only the six baseball players for completion (which are being offered as a separate lot in this auction). The N43 series, the rarest of the three Allen & Ginter "Champions" sets, feature the same subjects and designs as the smaller N29 second series Allen & Ginters, but in a larger format and with extra background artwork added to each card's design. Measuring approximately 3 x 3.25 inches, the N43 Allen & Ginters are widely recognized as one of the most attractive sets ever issued. The set features champions and stars of the day from a variety of sports including boxing (an extremely noteworthy and desirable subset of eight cards in its own right). This is a very sharp-looking group of these rare cards. We selected eight cards to be graded by SGC and two were already graded by PSA when we received the set. All of these cards look far superior to their PSA and SGC assigned grades! SGC Report: Two EX/NM 80: Crist (cyclist) and Temple (cyclist). Five VG/EX 50: Edwards (boxer), Fitzgerald (pedestrians), Kerrigan (boxer, PSA VG-EX 4), Queckberner (weight lifter), and Ray (pole vaulter). One VG 40: Ross (athlete). One PSA GOOD 2: Boyton (swimmer), front is Ex, glue stains on reverse. One PSA FAIR 20: George (runner), front is Ex, reverse has two small areas of surface paper loss. The balance of the cards have glue stains, or in a few cases a hint of paper loss, on the backs (except twelve cards which have clean backs), but otherwise the cards are very strong and the fronts appear Ex overall. The graded cards each also have an Excellent appearance and have been downgraded in most cases (some by many grades) due to very minor back damage (which is relatively common with N43s in general). N43 Allen & Ginters is a very rare set to find complete or near-complete. In fact, in all our years this is the first time we have had the opportunity to offer a complete set (offered as two separate lots in this auction; baseball and non-baseball). This is a very attractive collection and an extremely rare opportunity to acquire virtually the entire set, needing only the six baseball players (which, as noted, are offered separately) for the complete assembly of a beautiful set of N43 Allen & Ginter. Total 44 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate (open).
