Extraordinary 1924 World Series Panorama with Calvin Coolidge
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,288
One of the all-time great baseball display photographs, this extraordinary museum-caliber panorama (45 x 8.75 inches) captures the participants of the 1924 World Series, the New York Giants and Washington Senators, posing together with President Calvin Coolidge before the start of the seventh and deciding game of the series at Washington's Griffith Stadium. Coolidge is standing in the grandstand flanked by opposing managers John McGraw and Bucky Harris, with Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis and Washington owner Clark Griffith posing behind him. Standing in line in front of the grandstand are the Senators and Giants team members, as well as the umpiring crew and League officials, including Walter Johnson, Sam Rice, Goose Goslin, Ban Johnson, Bill Klem, Hughie Jennings, Hack Wilson, Bill Terry, Frankie Frisch, George Kelly, Ross Youngs, and Travis Jackson. The caption, "President Coolidge and the Washington, A. L. & New York, N. L. World Series Base Ball Teams - Washington World's Champions - October 10, 1924," is printed in white lettering along the base. The photographer's credit, Schutz Studios of Washington D.C., appears in the lower right. One fascinating aspect of this striking photo is that the eyes of the thousands of fans in the stands are all fixed in unison in the direction of the photographer. This is one of the most highly regarded and visually interesting of all panoramic photographs and considered by many to be the finest baseball panoramic photo of the decade. This particular example is perfect with respect to both contrast and clarity. There is a light vertical crease running down the center of the photo; however, it is only visible when viewed at certain angles and is virtually unnoticeable under normal observation. The photo also displays a few extremely minor edge tears which are hidden by the matting. Despite the minor condition anomalies, the photo displays as Near Mint and is one of the finest examples we have ever handled. Framed to total dimensions of 52.5 x 16 inches. Please Note: Due to the size and/or weight of this lot, shipping costs (depending on where it is sent and its method of shipping) may be substantial. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $5,288
