1915 Boston Red Sox Fatima Tobacco Advertising Display with Babe Ruth (Rookie)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,350

Fatima Cigarettes large-format advertising display featuring a team photo of the 1915 World Champion Boston Red Sox including rookie Babe Ruth. Twenty-one team members are pictured, all of whom are identified in print below the photo, including rookie pitcher Babe Ruth (standing in the back row), Harry Hooper, Joe Wood, Carl Mays, and Ernie Shore. This image of the Red Sox, as noted in the lower margin, was taken by noted photographer Paul Thompson and licensed by The Pictorial News Co. of New York. The caption "Red Sox ready to do battle for World's Championship" is printed along the base of the advertisement and a color illustration of a Fatima cigarette pack appears in the right corner. Obviously, given the caption, this advertisement was issued just prior to the 1915 World Series between the Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies. This is one of a series of promotional window advertising posters issued by Fatima to retailers between 1913 and 1915 (including, among others, a companion piece featuring the National League champion Phillies). These Fatima posters have received surprisingly little attention considering how substantial and ideal-for-display they are, and in light of the fact that they are issued by Fatima, a tobacco company so well known for issuing baseball cards. The Standard Catalog currently checklists fifteen different posters in the series. This is one of the most desirable of the posters in the series both because it features the Red Sox team, a full-color Fatima pack (the earliest-issued Fatima advertising posters do not have this design element) and, most important, Ruth during his rookie season. The poster (18.5 x 12.5 inches) displays a single horizontal and vertical fold line (as issued) and a few small edge tears that appear to have been professionally reinforced on the reverse. In Very Good to Excellent condition. Mounted (by means of clear corner hinges) and very expensively framed to total dimensions of 29 x 23 inches. This is a rare and outstanding tobacco advertising display (perhaps the only one that features Ruth) that would be a worthy addition to even the most advanced collection. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,350
