1925 Walter Johnson and Ty Cobb Photo
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $705
Original press photo, culled from The Chicago Sun Times archives, capturing Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators and Ty Cobb of the Detroit Tigers shaking hands prior to a game in Washington. Reverse markings consist of a "Wide World Photos" credit stamp (style used by the company during the 1920s), the handwritten date "8-7-25," and period editorial notations. The original paper news caption, dated 8/5/25, remains attached to the reverse and makes special note of the meeting between the two: "Been Fighting 18 Years Yet Good Friends - Walter Johnson of the Nationals and Ty Cobb, manager of the Detroits, arm and arm before the game between the Tigers and the Washington team. Eighteen years ago when Johnson pitched his first game in the big league he pitched against the Tigers and also against Ty Cobb. As they played yesterday, they were the only two on the teams which opposed each other on both dates." Although it was eighteen years since their first meeting, both players were still going strong in 1925. Johnson finished the year with a 20-7 record and 3.07 ERA, while Cobb batted .378 with 12 home runs and 102 RBI. The photo (6 x 8 inches) has a few very minor flaws common to nearly all working press photos, including surface wear and light editorial shading. Perfect contrast. In Very Good condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+.
