1913 Chief Bender Photo by Paul Thompson
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,058
Original Paul Thompson press photo, culled from The Chicago Sun Times archives, capturing Hall of Fame pitcher Chief Bender as a member of the Philadelphia A's. Bender is pictured from the waist up as he poses for the camera on field. Reverse markings include Paul Thompson's credit stamp, an "Oct 11 1913" date stamp, and an "American Press Association" credit stamp. This is a particularly crisp, flawless image. October 11, 1913, marked the date of the final game of the World Series between the A's and Giants. Bender was the pitching star of the Series, winning two games in the A's five-game victory over the Giants. Bender won 212 games over the course of sixteen seasons, and three times led the American League in winning percentage. Long after Bender's playing career was over, Connie Mack, who managed Lefty Grove, Rube Waddell, and Eddie Plank, among others, paid him the ultimate compliment: "If I had all the men I've ever handled and they were in their prime and there was one game I wanted to win above all others...Albert would be my man." (Mack always called Bender by his middle name, Albert.) The photo (6.5 x 8.5 inches) has a few very minor flaws common to nearly all working press photos, including a vertical crease. In Very Good condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+.
