1911 Cy Young Photo
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $529
Original press photo, culled from The Chicago Sun Times archives, capturing the legendary Cy Young as a member of the Cleveland Naps. The crystal-clear action image pictures Young in his road jersey as he warms up prior to a game. Given the background shown here (forest/woods), it is obvious that this photo was not taken at a Major League stadium. Instead, it was probably taken during spring training or at an exhibition game. Wherever Young was at the time is irrelevant compared to what this photo shows. This is one of the finest Cy Young photos we have ever seen, both with regard to the razor-sharp clarity it displays and the fact that Young is showcasing his classic pitching delivery. It is also historically significant, as it dates to 1911, his final season in the Major Leagues. Reverse markings consist of an "American Press Association" credit stamp, a "Jun 27 1911" date stamp, Young's printed name, and period editorial notations, one of which reads "In his last season - his 21st in baseball." Young compiled a 3-4 record with Cleveland in 1911 before he was released by the club on August 16th. Three days later he was signed by the Boston Red Sox, with whom he recorded the final four wins of his career. The photo (6.5 x 5 inches) has a few very minor flaws common to nearly all working press photos, including a trimmed right border and minor edge tears. In Very Good condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+.
