1937 Joe DiMaggio Wirephoto
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $353
Original Associated Press wirephoto, culled from The Detroit News archives, capturing Joe DiMaggio signing autographs for fans during the 1937 World Series at the Polo Grounds. DiMaggio is pictured in his road uniform as a throng of fans, both young and old alike, jostle with each other in order to be next in line for an autograph. Reverse markings include three date stamps ("Oct 12 1937," "May 4 1980," and "Mar 22 1992") and various period editorial notations, one of which reads "World Series 1937." In 1934 the Associated Press became the first major news organization to perfect the wirephoto process (whereby an image of a photo could be transferred over telephone lines), which allowed papers to receive images much more quickly than before. This photo, which was produced from a wirephoto machine, is an early example and features an "AP Wirephoto" credit in the lower right corner. The Yankees captured their second consecutive World Championship in 1937 by defeating the New York Giants in five games. DiMaggio, who was in just his second season with the club, was already a major star and one of the most popular players in the league, as this photo clearly attests. This is a charming photo and it is interesting to note that included among the items being offered to DiMaggio to sign are balls, programs (which he is pictured signing), and an autograph book. The photo (4.75 x 7.75 inches) has a number of minor flaws common to nearly all working press photos, including a slightly wavy right border (probably related to the early wirephoto process) and a few editorial marks on the front. Very Good to Excellent condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $353
